Nestlé India Ltd. set up its first factory in India in 1961 in which state?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — Punjab
Detailed Solution
Nestlé India set up its first factory in India at Moga in Punjab in 1961. The factory was set up mainly to process milk.
Why Moga was chosen:
The Government of India wanted to develop the dairy economy of the region, and Punjab had a large number of farmers with milch cattle.
When Nestlé started, milk collection in the area was small, and many farmers had no organised way to sell their milk. Nestlé built a milk collection network in the villages around Moga, set up chilling centres, and gave farmers technical help in animal care, feeding, veterinary services and better breeding.
This helped raise milk production and farmers' incomes in the region, and Moga became an important dairy district.
About Nestlé:
Nestlé is a Swiss multinational food and beverage company, founded in 1866 by Henri Nestlé. Its headquarters is in Vevey, Switzerland.
It is one of the world's largest food companies.
Nestlé's relationship with India began in 1912, when it started importing and trading products in India as "The Nestlé Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company (Export) Limited".
Nestlé India was incorporated in 1959.
After Moga, Nestlé India set up factories at Choladi (Tamil Nadu, 1967), Nanjangud (Karnataka, 1989), Samalkha (Haryana, 1993), Ponda and Bicholim (Goa), Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) and Tahliwal (Himachal Pradesh), among others. Its newer factory is in Sanand, Gujarat.
Its famous brands in India include Maggi noodles, Nescafé, KitKat, Munch, Milkybar, Cerelac and Everyday dairy whitener.
India's dairy story:
- India is the world's largest milk producer.
- The "White Revolution" (Operation Flood, 1970) was led by Dr Verghese Kurien, the "Father of the White Revolution", through the Amul cooperative model (Anand, Gujarat).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Haryana has a later Nestlé factory at Samalkha (1993).
- ✗Gujarat has a newer Nestlé factory at Sanand.
- ✗Maharashtra was not the site of Nestlé's first factory.
Quick tip
Remember: Nestlé India's first factory = Moga, Punjab (1961), a milk factory; Nestlé HQ = Vevey, Switzerland; White Revolution = Verghese Kurien (Amul, Anand).
