Answer: Option C — Bangkok, Thailand

Detailed Solution

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) was established on 8 August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the "ASEAN Declaration", also called the "Bangkok Declaration".

About the founding of ASEAN:

  • It was founded by five countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.
  • The declaration was signed by their foreign ministers.
  • Its aims are to promote economic growth, social progress, cultural development, regional peace and stability, and cooperation among its members.
  • 8 August is celebrated as "ASEAN Day".

Members of ASEAN:

  • The five founders were later joined by Brunei (1984), Vietnam (1995), Laos and Myanmar (1997) and Cambodia (1999), making ten members.
  • Timor-Leste was accepted in principle in 2022 and was admitted as the eleventh member in October 2025.

About ASEAN:

  • Its Secretariat is in Jakarta, Indonesia (since 1976).
  • Its motto is "One Vision, One Identity, One Community".
  • The "ASEAN Charter", adopted in 2007 and in force from 2008, gave ASEAN a legal identity.
  • The "ASEAN Economic Community" (AEC) was established in 2015.
  • The ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF, 1994) and the East Asia Summit (EAS, 2005) are forums linked to ASEAN, which include countries such as India, China, Japan, the USA and Russia.

The "Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership" (RCEP), a free trade agreement among ASEAN and five partners (China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand), came into force in 2022. India chose not to join it in 2019.

India and ASEAN:

  • India became a "sectoral dialogue partner" of ASEAN in 1992, a "full dialogue partner" in 1996 and a "summit-level partner" in 2002.
  • The relationship was upgraded to a "Strategic Partnership" in 2012 and a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership" in 2022.

India's "Look East Policy" (1991), started by Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao, was upgraded to the "Act East Policy" in 2014.

The ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement came into force in 2010.

The leaders of all ten ASEAN countries were the chief guests at India's Republic Day parade in 2018.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Jakarta has the ASEAN Secretariat.
  • ✗Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia.
  • ✗Manila is the capital of the Philippines.

This question tests your understanding of International Economic Organisations, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers international economic and financial organisations: the IMF, the World Bank group, the WTO, the Asian Development Bank, the New Development Bank, the AIIB, OPEC, the OECD and groupings such as the G20, along with their headquarters, founding and functions. Questions usually ask where an organisation is headquartered, when it was set up, and what it does. For example, the IMF and World Bank were created at the Bretton Woods Conference in 1944, the WTO replaced GATT in 1995, and the New Development Bank, set up by the BRICS countries, is headquartered in Shanghai. Practise the international economic organisations questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
