Answer: Option A — New York

Detailed Solution

The headquarters of UNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund) is in New York City, USA.

About UNICEF:

It was created on 11 December 1946 by the United Nations General Assembly as the "United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund", to provide emergency food and health care to children in countries devastated by the Second World War.

In 1953, it became a permanent part of the United Nations, and its name was shortened to the "United Nations Children's Fund", but it kept the acronym UNICEF.

It works in more than 190 countries and territories to protect the rights of every child.

It is funded by voluntary contributions from governments and private donors.

Its work covers child health and nutrition, immunisation, education, clean water and sanitation, child protection (against violence, exploitation and child marriage), and emergency relief.

It is guided by the UN "Convention on the Rights of the Child" (1989), the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history. India ratified it in 1992.

It received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965.

It publishes the annual report "The State of the World's Children".

Its supply division is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

UNICEF in India:

  • It has worked in India since 1949; its India country office is in New Delhi.
  • It has supported India's programmes on immunisation (including polio eradication), nutrition, sanitation (Swachh Bharat), education and child protection.

Other UN bodies headquartered in New York:

UN Secretariat and General Assembly, UN Development Programme (UNDP), UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and UN Women.

  • Geneva: WHO, ILO, UNHCR, WTO, and the UN Human Rights Council.
  • Paris: UNESCO.
  • Vienna: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UNIDO.
  • Rome: FAO, WFP and IFAD.
  • Nairobi: UNEP and UN-Habitat.

Related days:

  • Universal Children's Day: 20 November (the date the Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted in 1989).
  • Children's Day in India: 14 November (Nehru's birthday).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Geneva has the WHO, ILO and UNHCR.
  • ✗Paris has UNESCO.
  • ✗Vienna has the IAEA and UNODC.
