Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Jammu and Kashmir

Detailed Solution

Dogri is mainly spoken in the Jammu region of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also spoken in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

About Dogri:

It is an Indo-Aryan language, closely related to Punjabi and the Pahari languages.

It is named after the Dogra people, who live mainly in the Jammu region. The Dogra dynasty ruled Jammu and Kashmir from 1846 to 1947; its first ruler was Maharaja Gulab Singh.

It was traditionally written in the "Takri" script (also called "Dogra Akkhar"), but it is now mainly written in the Devanagari script.

In 1969, the Sahitya Akademi recognised Dogri as an independent literary language.

It was added to the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution by the 92nd Constitutional Amendment Act, 2003, along with Bodo, Maithili and Santhali. This increased the number of scheduled languages to 22.

Under the Jammu and Kashmir Official Languages Act, 2020, Dogri, Kashmiri, Hindi, Urdu and English are the official languages of the Union Territory. Before this, Urdu was the only official language (with English).

Dogri literature:

  • Padma Sachdev (1940-2021): the first modern woman poet of Dogri; she received the Sahitya Akademi Award (1971) and the Padma Shri (2001).
  • Other noted writers include Dinu Bhai Pant and Ved Rahi.

About the 92nd Amendment (2003):

It added four languages: Bodo (Assam), Dogri (Jammu and Kashmir), Maithili (Bihar) and Santhali (Jharkhand and other states, written in the Ol Chiki script).

Other amendments that added languages:

  • 21st Amendment (1967): Sindhi.
  • 71st Amendment (1992): Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali.

Languages of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh:

  • Kashmiri: spoken in the Kashmir Valley; written in the Perso-Arabic script.
  • Gojri: spoken by the Gujjar community.
  • Pahari: spoken in the Pir Panjal region.
  • Ladakhi (Bhoti): spoken in Ladakh.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Himachal Pradesh has some Dogri speakers, but Dogri is mainly spoken in Jammu.
  • ✗Punjab mainly speaks Punjabi.
  • ✗Uttarakhand mainly speaks Garhwali, Kumaoni and Hindi.

Quick tip

Remember: Dogri = Jammu region of J&K (added to the Eighth Schedule by the 92nd Amendment, 2003, with Bodo, Maithili and Santhali); J&K official languages (2020) = Dogri, Kashmiri, Hindi, Urdu and English.
