What is the official language of Rajasthan?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — Hindi
Detailed Solution
The official language of Rajasthan is Hindi, under the Rajasthan Official Language Act, 1956. English is also used for some official purposes.
Many people in Rajasthan speak varieties of Rajasthani, an Indo-Aryan language, at home. Its main dialects include:
Marwari: western Rajasthan (Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Nagaur), the most widely spoken.
Dhundhari (Jaipuri): around Jaipur.
Mewari: Mewar region (Udaipur, Chittorgarh).
Harauti (Hadoti): Kota, Bundi and Jhalawar.
Mewati: north-eastern Rajasthan (Alwar, Bharatpur).
Wagdi (Vagdi): southern Rajasthan (Dungarpur, Banswara), spoken by Bhils.
Malvi: south-eastern areas near Madhya Pradesh.
Although Rajasthani has a rich literature, with works such as "Prithviraj Raso", the poetry of Meera Bai, and the ballads of Pabuji and Dhola-Maru, it is not yet included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The Rajasthan Assembly passed a resolution in 2003 asking the central government to include it, and the demand is still pending. The Sahitya Akademi, however, recognises Rajasthani and gives awards for literature in it. In the Census, Rajasthani is counted as a mother tongue grouped under Hindi.
The official languages of some other states:
- Gujarat: Gujarati and Hindi.
- Punjab: Punjabi.
- Uttar Pradesh: Hindi, with Urdu as an additional official language.
- Telangana: Telugu, with Urdu as the second official language.
- Jammu and Kashmir: Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi, Urdu and English (since 2020).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Rajasthani is a regional language but not the state's official language and not in the Eighth Schedule.
- ✗Marwari is a dialect of Rajasthani.
- ✗Urdu is an additional official language in some other states, such as Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.
Quick tip
Remember: Rajasthan's official language = Hindi (1956 Act); Rajasthani (Marwari, Mewari, Dhundhari, Hadoti) is not in the Eighth Schedule.
