In which year did the Government of India decide to observe 'Constitution Day' (Samvidhan Divas) every year, in place of the earlier 'National Law Day'?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 2015

Detailed Solution

In 2015, the Government of India (through a notification of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment) decided to observe "Constitution Day" (Samvidhan Divas) every year, to promote awareness of the Constitution among citizens.

Why 2015:

The year 2015 marked the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the Chairman of the Drafting Committee.

The government decided to honour his contribution to the making of the Constitution by observing Constitution Day.

The day had earlier been observed as "National Law Day", mainly by lawyers and the legal community, from 1979, following a resolution of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

How the day is observed:

  • The Preamble of the Constitution is read out in schools, colleges, government offices and other institutions.
  • Seminars, quiz competitions, essay competitions and lectures are held on the Constitution and its values.
  • Special sittings of Parliament were held in 2015 to discuss the Constitution.

Purpose:

  • To make citizens, especially young people, aware of the values of the Constitution, such as justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.
  • To remember the contribution of the members of the Constituent Assembly.
  • To encourage respect for the Constitution and the rule of law.

Other related days:

  • Republic Day is celebrated on the day the Constitution came into force.
  • Ambedkar Jayanti is celebrated on 14 April.
  • Mahaparinirvan Diwas, the death anniversary of Ambedkar, is observed on 6 December.
  • National Voters' Day is observed on 25 January, the foundation day of the Election Commission of India (1950).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2005, 2010 and 2019 are not the year in which the decision to observe Constitution Day was taken.

Quick tip

Remember: Constitution Day (Samvidhan Divas) notified in 2015 (125th birth anniversary year of Dr. Ambedkar); earlier observed as National Law Day.
