Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Vasant Krishan Vaidya

Detailed Solution

The Hindi version of the original handwritten Constitution of India was calligraphed by Vasant Krishan Vaidya.

The handwritten copies:

  • The original Constitution was not printed or typed; it was handwritten in English and in Hindi.
  • The English version was handwritten in a flowing italic style by Prem Behari Narain Raizada (Saxena) of Delhi.
  • The Hindi version was handwritten by Vasant Krishan Vaidya, in beautiful Devanagari calligraphy.
  • Each copy was written on special parchment-like paper.
  • Raizada did the work without charging any fee, but asked that his name be written on each page, and his grandfather's name on the last page.

The illustrations:

The pages of the original Constitution were decorated by artists of Santiniketan, under the guidance of the famous artist Nandalal Bose.

The illustrations show scenes from Indian history and culture, from the Indus Valley Civilisation to the freedom struggle: the Vedic period, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, the Buddha and Mahavira, Ashoka, the Gupta period, Akbar, Shivaji, Guru Gobind Singh, Tipu Sultan, Rani Lakshmibai, Gandhi's Dandi March, and Subhas Chandra Bose.

Beohar Rammanohar Sinha, a student of Nandalal Bose, decorated the Preamble page.

The original copies were published in facsimile by the Survey of India at Dehradun.

Preservation:

  • The original handwritten copies are kept in special helium-filled cases in the Library of Parliament, New Delhi, to protect them from damage.
  • They were placed in these cases in the 1990s, with the help of the Getty Conservation Institute of the USA.

About Nandalal Bose:

  • He was a famous painter of the Bengal School of art, and the principal of Kala Bhavana at Santiniketan.
  • He also designed the emblems for national awards, such as the Bharat Ratna and the Padma awards.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Raizada handwrote the English version; Nandalal Bose and Beohar Rammanohar Sinha illustrated the pages.

Quick tip

Remember: original Constitution handwritten - English by Prem Behari Narain Raizada, Hindi by Vasant Krishan Vaidya; illustrations by Nandalal Bose and Santiniketan artists.

This topic covers how the Indian Constitution was made: the Constituent Assembly, its committees and members, the drafting process and key dates, and the features India borrowed from other constitutions, such as the parliamentary system from Britain and Fundamental Rights from the USA. Exams frequently ask who chaired the Drafting Committee (B. R. Ambedkar), who was President of the Constituent Assembly (Rajendra Prasad), and when the Constitution was adopted (26 November 1949) and came into force (26 January 1950). Questions on borrowed features are very common, so learn a table of features and their source countries. Practise the making of the Constitution questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
