Answer: Option B ā Storehouse of minerals
Detailed Solution
The Chota Nagpur plateau, in eastern India, is called the "mineral storehouse" or "storehouse of minerals" of India because it contains rich deposits of a wide variety of minerals, many of them important for heavy industry.
Location:
- The Chota Nagpur plateau covers most of Jharkhand and adjoining parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Bihar.
- It is made up of very old rocks of the Precambrian age (part of the ancient Peninsular block), along with coal-bearing Gondwana rocks in its river valleys.
- Its highest point is Parasnath hill (about 1,350 metres) in Jharkhand, a sacred Jain pilgrimage site.
- The Ranchi plateau, the Hazaribagh plateau and the Koderma plateau are parts of it.
Minerals found here:
Coal: in the Damodar valley coalfields such as Bokaro, Giridih, Karanpura and Raniganj (West Bengal). These are Gondwana coals.
Iron ore: high-grade hematite in the Singhbhum region.
Copper: in the Singhbhum copper belt, around Ghatsila.
Bauxite: around Lohardaga and the Pat region of Jharkhand.
Other minerals include manganese, limestone, dolomite, graphite, kyanite and fireclay.
Industrial importance:
- Because coal and iron ore are found close together, the region became the main centre of the iron and steel industry in India.
- Major steel plants nearby include Jamshedpur (Tata Steel), Bokaro, Durgapur, Burnpur and Rourkela.
- The Damodar Valley Corporation provides power and water to industries in the region.
Physical features:
- The plateau is drained by rivers such as the Damodar, Subarnarekha, Barakar, North Koel, South Koel and Brahmani.
- It has waterfalls such as Hundru, Dassam and Jonha near Ranchi.
- It is a major tribal region, home to the Santhal, Munda, Oraon and Ho communities.
Why not the other options?
- ā"Granary of India" is a name often used for Punjab, for its large food grain production.
- ā"Sugar bowl of India" is a nickname for a leading sugar-producing region, not a mineral region.
- ā"Tea garden of India" is a name used for Assam.
Quick tip
Remember: Chota Nagpur plateau (mainly Jharkhand) = storehouse of minerals of India, with coal and iron ore close together, the base of the steel industry.

Minerals & Energy Resources ā Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Minerals & Energy Resources, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's mineral resources (iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mica and others) and energy resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy), with their main producing regions, mines, oil fields and power plants. Questions often ask where a mineral is found, which state is the leading producer, or where an important power plant or oil field is located. For example, Jharia is known for coal, Digboi in Assam is the oldest oil field in India, and Tarapur in Maharashtra is the site of India's first nuclear power plant. Practise the minerals and energy resources questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
