Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Iron ore

Detailed Solution

The Bellary (Ballari)-Chitradurga-Chikkamagaluru-Tumakuru belt in Karnataka contains large deposits of iron ore, both hematite and magnetite. Karnataka is one of the leading iron ore producing states of India.

Important iron ore areas of the belt:

Ballari-Hosapete-Sandur region: the most productive area, with high-grade hematite ore. Sandur is famous for its iron ore hills.

Kudremukh (Chikkamagaluru district): rich in magnetite ore. The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited (KIOCL) mined here and sent the ore as a slurry through a pipeline to Mangaluru for export. Mining was stopped by a Supreme Court order in 2005-06 because the mine lay in the Kudremukh National Park, a rich rainforest area of the Western Ghats.

Chitradurga and Tumakuru districts: smaller deposits.

Industries based on this ore:

  • JSW Steel's Vijayanagar Works at Toranagallu in Ballari district, one of the largest steel plants in India.
  • The Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant at Bhadravati (Shivamogga district), founded in 1923, is one of the oldest steel plants in India.
  • Much of the ore was also exported, mainly through the ports of Mangaluru and Goa.

The Bellary mining scandal:

In the 2000s, huge demand for iron ore from China led to widespread illegal mining in Ballari district, with mining beyond lease areas and large-scale illegal exports.

A report by the Karnataka Lokayukta (Justice N. Santosh Hegde) exposed the scale of the scandal in 2011.

The Supreme Court banned mining in the area in 2011, and allowed it to resume gradually, with strict limits and environmental conditions.

India's major iron ore regions:

  • Odisha-Jharkhand belt (Singhbhum, Keonjhar, Sundargarh).
  • Durg-Bastar-Chandrapur belt (Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra).
  • Ballari-Chitradurga-Chikkamagaluru-Tumakuru belt (Karnataka).
  • Goa belt.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Gold in Karnataka comes mainly from Kolar (historically) and Hutti in Raichur district, not this belt.
  • ✗Manganese is found in parts of Karnataka, such as the Sandur hills, but the belt is chiefly known for iron ore.
  • ✗Bauxite in Karnataka occurs in small amounts, mainly in the Belagavi area.

Quick tip

Remember: Ballari-Chitradurga-Chikkamagaluru-Tumakuru = iron ore belt of Karnataka; Kudremukh = magnetite (closed 2006); JSW Vijayanagar = steel plant.

Minerals & Energy Resources — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Minerals & Energy Resources, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's mineral resources (iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mica and others) and energy resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy), with their main producing regions, mines, oil fields and power plants. Questions often ask where a mineral is found, which state is the leading producer, or where an important power plant or oil field is located. For example, Jharia is known for coal, Digboi in Assam is the oldest oil field in India, and Tarapur in Maharashtra is the site of India's first nuclear power plant. Practise the minerals and energy resources questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
