Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — Jharkhand
Detailed Solution
Gua and Noamundi are well-known iron ore mines in the West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, in the mineral-rich Singhbhum region near the border with Odisha.
About these mines:
Noamundi is operated by Tata Steel. It is one of the oldest captive iron ore mines in India, supplying high-grade hematite ore to the Tata steel plant at Jamshedpur.
Gua is operated by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and supplies ore to SAIL's steel plants.
Other iron ore mines in the same belt include Kiriburu, Meghahatuburu and the Chiria mines. The Chiria deposit is considered one of the largest iron ore deposits in India.
The Singhbhum-Keonjhar-Sundargarh belt:
- The iron ore belt extends from West Singhbhum in Jharkhand into the Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj districts of Odisha.
- Odisha's major mines in this belt include Badampahar, Gorumahisani, Kiriburu-Barsua and Joda.
- The belt mainly contains hematite, which is a high-quality iron ore.
Importance:
These mines supply the steel plants of eastern India, such as Jamshedpur (Tata Steel), Bokaro, Rourkela and Durgapur.
Types of iron ore:
- Magnetite: the best quality, with up to about 70 per cent iron; it has magnetic properties.
- Hematite: the most widely used ore in industry, with about 50 to 70 per cent iron.
- Limonite: lower-grade ore with about 35 to 50 per cent iron.
- Siderite: low-grade ore, an iron carbonate.
India's iron ore:
India is one of the world's largest producers of iron ore, and a large share of its output comes from this eastern belt.
Jamshedpur:
Jamshedpur, founded by Jamsetji Tata (the Tata Iron and Steel Company began production in 1912), is called the "Steel City of India" because of its closeness to these iron ore and other mineral deposits.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Goa has iron ore mines, but these are mainly of lower grade and are exported.
- ✗Maharashtra has iron ore in the Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts.
- ✗Telangana has coal at Singareni but is not known for these mines.
Quick tip
Remember: Gua and Noamundi = iron ore mines of West Singhbhum, Jharkhand; Noamundi (Tata Steel) supplies Jamshedpur.

Minerals & Energy Resources — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Minerals & Energy Resources, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's mineral resources (iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mica and others) and energy resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy), with their main producing regions, mines, oil fields and power plants. Questions often ask where a mineral is found, which state is the leading producer, or where an important power plant or oil field is located. For example, Jharia is known for coal, Digboi in Assam is the oldest oil field in India, and Tarapur in Maharashtra is the site of India's first nuclear power plant. Practise the minerals and energy resources questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
