The Kaimur Plateau is famous for deposits of:

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Limestone

Detailed Solution

The Kaimur Plateau (part of the Kaimur Range) is known for its large deposits of limestone, which support a number of cement factories in the region.

Location of the Kaimur Range:

It is the eastern part of the Vindhyan range, extending for about 480 km from near Katni in Madhya Pradesh, through the Rewa region and southern Uttar Pradesh (Mirzapur and Sonbhadra), to the Rohtas and Kaimur districts of Bihar.

It lies north of the Son river valley.

It is made up of sedimentary rocks of the Vindhyan Supergroup, mainly sandstone, shale and limestone.

Limestone and cement industry:

Limestone (calcium carbonate) is the main raw material for making cement.

Cement plants grew up in the region because of the limestone, with coal available nearby. Important centres include Kymore (Katni, MP), Maihar and Satna (MP), Churk and Dalla (Sonbhadra, UP), and Banjari and Japla in the Rohtas area.

The Dalmianagar industrial complex at Dehri-on-Sone in Bihar once had a large cement plant.

The Rohtas plateau limestone also supplies lime for other industries.

Other uses of limestone:

  • Iron and steel industry: used as a flux in blast furnaces to remove impurities.
  • Lime production for construction, chemicals, sugar refining, paper and glass.
  • Agriculture: used to reduce soil acidity.
  • Building stone and road material.

Other features of the Kaimur region:

  • Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary, the largest wildlife sanctuary of Bihar.
  • Rohtasgarh Fort, an ancient hill fort in Rohtas district.
  • Waterfalls such as Telhar Kund and Karkat.
  • Prehistoric rock shelters with cave paintings.

Major limestone areas of India:

Limestone is found in many states. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat have large resources and production.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Mica occurs in pegmatites of the Nellore and Koderma belts, not on the Kaimur plateau.
  • ✗Copper is mined in the Khetri, Malanjkhand and Singhbhum belts.
  • ✗Gypsum is found mainly in western Rajasthan.

Quick tip

Remember: Kaimur Plateau (eastern Vindhyas, MP-UP-Bihar) = limestone and cement plants (Kymore, Churk, Banjari).

Minerals & Energy Resources — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Minerals & Energy Resources, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's mineral resources (iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mica and others) and energy resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy), with their main producing regions, mines, oil fields and power plants. Questions often ask where a mineral is found, which state is the leading producer, or where an important power plant or oil field is located. For example, Jharia is known for coal, Digboi in Assam is the oldest oil field in India, and Tarapur in Maharashtra is the site of India's first nuclear power plant. Practise the minerals and energy resources questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
