Answer: Option C — Rajasthan
Detailed Solution
The Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (RAPS) is located at Rawatbhata, in the Chittorgarh district of Rajasthan, about 65 km from Kota.
About the Rawatbhata nuclear power station:
- It is built near the Rana Pratap Sagar Dam on the Chambal river, which supplies water for cooling.
- It is operated by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).
- Its first unit (RAPS-1) was built with help from Canada, based on the CANDU (Canada Deuterium Uranium) design, and began commercial operation in 1973.
- After India's first nuclear test in 1974, Canada withdrew its support, and India completed the second unit and later units on its own.
- It uses Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), which use natural uranium as fuel and heavy water as moderator and coolant.
- It has several units of 100 to 220 MW.
Two new indigenous 700 MW PHWRs (RAPP-7 and RAPP-8) have been built at the site. RAPP-7 began commercial operation in 2025.
With these additions, Rawatbhata is becoming one of the largest nuclear power sites in India.
A Heavy Water Plant is also located at Rawatbhata.
About the Chambal river:
- It rises in the Vindhya Range near Mhow in Madhya Pradesh and flows through Rajasthan before joining the Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh.
- Its dams include the Gandhi Sagar (MP), Rana Pratap Sagar (Rajasthan), Jawahar Sagar and Kota Barrage.
- The National Chambal Sanctuary protects the gharial, the red-crowned roof turtle and the Gangetic river dolphin.
About India's nuclear power:
India's first nuclear power plant was Tarapur in Maharashtra (1969).
India follows a three-stage nuclear power programme designed by Homi J. Bhabha.
Nuclear energy provides only a small share (about 3 per cent) of India's electricity. India aims to reach 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Gujarat has the Kakrapar Atomic Power Station.
- ✗Madhya Pradesh has a planned plant at Chutka.
- ✗Uttar Pradesh has the Narora Atomic Power Station.
Quick tip
Remember: Rawatbhata (RAPS) = Chittorgarh district, Rajasthan, on the Chambal near Rana Pratap Sagar (CANDU design with Canadian help; first unit 1973; 700 MW RAPP-7); Narora = UP; Kakrapar = Gujarat.

Minerals & Energy Resources — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Minerals & Energy Resources, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's mineral resources (iron ore, manganese, bauxite, copper, mica and others) and energy resources (coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable energy), with their main producing regions, mines, oil fields and power plants. Questions often ask where a mineral is found, which state is the leading producer, or where an important power plant or oil field is located. For example, Jharia is known for coal, Digboi in Assam is the oldest oil field in India, and Tarapur in Maharashtra is the site of India's first nuclear power plant. Practise the minerals and energy resources questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
