Answer: Option A — 1528
Detailed Solution
The Aram Bagh ("Garden of Rest") at Agra, on the bank of the Yamuna, was laid out by Babur in 1528, and is believed to be one of the oldest Mughal gardens in India.
About the Aram Bagh:
- It was originally called "Bagh-i-Gul Afshan" ("Garden of Scattering Flowers"), and later "Nur Afshan" under Jahangir, who repaired it for his queen Nur Jahan.
- It was laid out in the Persian "char bagh" style, with the garden divided into four parts by water channels and walkways.
- It had terraces, water channels, pools, fountains and pavilions.
- Water was drawn from the Yamuna to irrigate the garden.
Babur and gardens:
- Babur loved gardens, and was disappointed by the lack of formal gardens in India.
- In his memoirs, he complained about the heat, dust and lack of running water in India, and described his efforts to create gardens.
- He laid out several gardens at Agra, Dholpur and elsewhere, and encouraged his nobles to do the same.
- Agra came to be called "Kabul" by some people because of the many gardens laid out by Babur and his nobles.
The char bagh:
- It is a garden layout divided into four equal parts by water channels or paths.
- It symbolised the four rivers of paradise described in the Quran.
- It became a typical feature of Mughal gardens, including those around tombs, such as Humayun's Tomb and the Taj Mahal.
Other famous Mughal gardens:
- Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh (Srinagar, Kashmir).
- Shalimar Gardens (Lahore).
- Pinjore Garden (Yadavindra Gardens), near Chandigarh.
- Mehtab Bagh (Agra), opposite the Taj Mahal.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1526 is not the year of the garden.
- ✗1532 and 1556 are not linked with the garden.
Quick tip
Remember: Aram Bagh, Agra = laid out by Babur in 1528 (oldest Mughal garden in India; originally Bagh-i-Gul Afshan; char bagh style).
