Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Bega Begum (Haji Begum)

Detailed Solution

Humayun's Tomb in Delhi was commissioned by Humayun's senior widow, Bega Begum (also known as Haji Begum), in about 1565, nine years after his death.

About the tomb:

  • It is located in the Nizamuddin area of Delhi, near the dargah of the Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya.
  • It was built between about 1565 and 1572.
  • It was designed by the Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas (Mirak Mirza Ghiyath), and completed by his son, Sayyid Muhammad.
  • It is said to have cost about 1.5 million rupees.
  • It was built during the reign of Akbar, Humayun's son.

Features:

  • It is built of red sandstone, decorated with white and black marble.
  • It has a large double dome of white marble, raised on a high drum.
  • It stands on a high platform in the middle of a large char bagh garden, divided into four parts by water channels and walkways.
  • It shows a combination of Persian and Indian architectural styles.
  • Its plan influenced later Mughal tombs, especially the Taj Mahal.
  • It is called the "dormitory of the Mughals" because many members of the Mughal royal family are buried there, including Dara Shikoh.
  • It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993.

About Bega Begum:

  • She was one of Humayun's wives, and she accompanied him in his campaigns.
  • She was captured by Sher Shah's forces after the battle of Chausa, but later returned.
  • She performed the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, which is why she was called "Haji Begum".
  • She was buried in the tomb complex.

Humayun's death:

Humayun died in January 1556 after falling down the stairs of the Sher Mandal, his library in the Purana Qila, Delhi.

Why not the other options?
