Answer: Option A — Murshidabad
Detailed Solution
The Hazarduari Palace ("Palace with a Thousand Doors") is located at Murshidabad, West Bengal, on the bank of the Bhagirathi river.
About the palace:
- It was built between 1829 and 1837 for Nawab Nazim Humayun Jah, a descendant of the Nawabs of Bengal.
- It was designed by Duncan McLeod, an officer of the Bengal Engineers.
- It is built in the Neo-Classical (Greek Doric) style, with a grand staircase and a large portico supported by columns.
- It has 1,000 doors, of which about 900 are real and about 100 are false; the false doors were meant to confuse intruders.
- It has more than 100 rooms.
- It now houses a museum managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
- The museum has a large collection of weapons, paintings, furniture, old manuscripts, and objects from the time of the Nawabs, including some linked with the Battle of Plassey.
Nearby monuments:
- The Nizamat Imambara, said to be one of the largest imambaras in India, opposite the palace.
- The Khushbagh, the cemetery where Alivardi Khan and Siraj-ud-Daula are buried.
- The Jahan Kosha cannon.
About Murshidabad:
- It was the capital of the Nawabs of Bengal in the 18th century.
- It was an important centre of trade, banking (the Jagat Seths) and silk production.
- After the British took control of Bengal, its importance declined, and Calcutta became the capital.
- Murshidabad silk (Baluchari sarees, originally) is famous.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Kolkata, Lucknow and Patna have other palaces and monuments.
