Answer: Option A — Andhra Pradesh
Detailed Solution
The Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple is located at Srisailam, in the Nandyal district (formerly part of Kurnool district) of Andhra Pradesh, on the Nallamala Hills above the Krishna river.
About the temple:
- It is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Mallikarjuna and to Goddess Parvati as Bhramaramba.
- It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.
- The shrine of Goddess Bhramaramba is also one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas.
- It is one of the very few places in India where a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha are found in the same temple complex.
- According to legend, Parvati took the form of a bee ("bhramara") to kill a demon, which is why she is called Bhramaramba.
The temple has tall gateway towers, high fortified walls and many carved pillars. Much of the present structure was built or expanded by the Vijayanagara rulers, especially Harihara II and Krishnadevaraya, and later by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who built the northern gopuram.
It is mentioned in ancient texts such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas.
The festival of Maha Shivaratri is celebrated here on a grand scale.
About Srisailam:
- The Srisailam Dam on the Krishna river is one of the largest hydroelectric projects in India.
- The Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve, the largest tiger reserve in India by area, surrounds the area.
- Other Jyotirlingas include Somnath (Gujarat), Kedarnath (Uttarakhand), Kashi Vishwanath (Varanasi) and Trimbakeshwar (Nashik).
- Maharashtra has the largest number of Jyotirlingas (three, or five according to some traditions).
- Other famous temples of Andhra Pradesh include the Simhachalam Temple (Visakhapatnam) and the Kanaka Durga Temple (Vijayawada).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Telangana has the Bhadrachalam Temple.
- ✗Karnataka has temples such as Udupi Krishna Matha.
- ✗Tamil Nadu has the Meenakshi Temple at Madurai.
Quick tip
Remember: Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga and Bhramaramba Shakti Peetha = Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh (Nallamala Hills, Krishna river); one of the rare places with both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha.
