Detailed Solution
Explanation
Kishori Amonkar (1932-2017) was one of the greatest Hindustani classical vocalists of the 20th century and a leading representative of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana.
Kishori Amonkar was born in Mumbai. She learnt music from her mother, the great singer Mogubai Kurdikar, who was a disciple of Ustad Alladiya Khan, the founder of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana. She also learnt from other teachers of different gharanas, which helped her develop her own creative style within the Jaipur-Atrauli tradition. The Jaipur-Atrauli gharana is known for its complex and intricate style, its use of rare and complicated ragas, and its long, flowing phrases that weave around the rhythm. Kishori Amonkar became known for her intense, emotional and spiritual approach to music, and for her belief that music should express deep feeling (rasa) rather than only technical skill. Besides khayal, she sang thumri, bhajan and other forms. She also sang for the Hindi film "Geet Gaya Patharon Ne" (1964) and composed music for the film "Drishti" (1990). She received the Padma Bhushan (1987) and the Padma Vibhushan (2002). The Kishori Amonkar Music Festival and several awards are named after her.
The Jaipur-Atrauli gharana was founded by Ustad Alladiya Khan (1855-1946). Its famous singers include Kesarbai Kerkar, Mogubai Kurdikar, Mallikarjun Mansur and Kishori Amonkar.
