Detailed Solution
"Mile Sur Mera Tumhara" is a famous national integration song first broadcast on Doordarshan on 15 August 1988, Independence Day, after the Prime Minister's speech. It was produced by the Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad and conceived to promote national unity across India's many languages and cultures.
The lyrics were written by Piyush Pandey, the advertising professional who later became the creative head of the agency Ogilvy & Mather in India and created famous campaigns such as "Fevicol", "Cadbury Kuch Khaas Hai" and "Abki Baar Modi Sarkar". He received the Padma Shri in 2016. The music was composed by Ashok Patki and arranged by Louis Banks.
The song opens with the Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi singing the line "Mile sur mera tumhara, to sur bane hamara" ("When my note and your note meet, it becomes our note"). The same idea is then sung in 14 Indian languages, including Hindi, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Sindhi, Urdu, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Assamese, Odia, Gujarati and Marathi. Many well-known personalities appeared in the video, including Lata Mangeshkar, M. Balamuralikrishna, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan and sports stars such as Prakash Padukone and Narendra Hirwani.
The song became one of the most loved patriotic songs in India. A new version, "Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara", was released in 2010 with a new generation of artists.
