Answer: Option C — Rajasthan
Detailed Solution
Both singers are known for Rajasthani folk music.
Allah Jilai Bai (1902-1992) was born in Bikaner. She was trained from childhood and sang at the court of Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner. She was the greatest singer of the Maand style, a refined Rajasthani folk-classical style once performed in royal courts. Her rendition of "Kesariya Balam Padharo Mhare Des" became the most famous song of Rajasthan and is now used as a song of welcome for guests. She received the Padma Shri in 1982 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. She is often called the "Maru Kokila" (Nightingale of the Desert).
Ila Arun (born 1954) was born in Jodhpur and grew up in Jaipur. She is a singer, actress and television personality who made Rajasthani folk-style music popular in films and pop music. Her famous songs include "Choli Ke Peeche" (with Alka Yagnik, in "Khalnayak", 1993), "Morni Baga Ma Bole" in "Lamhe", and the album "Vote for Ghagra". Her earthy, distinctive voice and use of folk elements made her a well-known figure. She has also acted in films and in theatre.
Rajasthan's folk music tradition is very rich. It includes hereditary professional musicians such as the Langas and Manganiyars of the Thar desert, who play the kamaicha, sarangi and khartal, and singers such as Mame Khan and Gavri Devi. Folk forms include Maand, Pankhida, Panihari and Moomal.
Rajasthan also has many folk dances, such as Ghoomar, Kalbeliya (UNESCO intangible heritage, 2010), Chari and Bhavai.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Gujarat's folk singers include Hemant Chauhan and Bhikhudan Gadhvi.
- ✗Punjab's folk singers include Gurdas Maan and Surinder Kaur.
- ✗Uttar Pradesh's folk singers include Malini Awasthi.
Quick tip
Remember: Allah Jilai Bai (Bikaner) = Maand, "Kesariya Balam", "Maru Kokila"; Ila Arun (Jodhpur/Jaipur) = Rajasthani folk-pop, "Choli Ke Peeche".
