Answer: Option D — Anand, Gujarat
Detailed Solution
Amul is a dairy cooperative brand based at Anand, in Gujarat.
About Amul:
The name "Amul" stands for "Anand Milk Union Limited". It is also derived from the Sanskrit word "amulya", meaning "priceless".
It began as the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union, registered on 14 December 1946 at Anand.
It was formed by farmers under the leadership of Tribhuvandas Patel, with the guidance of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Morarji Desai, to stop the exploitation of dairy farmers by private milk traders (especially Polson Dairy).
Dr. Verghese Kurien joined it in 1949 and later led it, turning it into a model for the whole country.
The Amul brand is marketed by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), founded in 1973, which is owned by millions of milk producers in Gujarat.
The "Anand pattern" of cooperatives has three tiers: village dairy cooperatives, district milk unions and the state federation.
Its success led to the creation of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) at Anand in 1965 and to "Operation Flood" (1970), which made India the world's largest milk producer.
Amul's products include milk, butter, cheese, ghee, ice cream, chocolates and milk powder.
Its famous mascot, the "Amul girl" (the "utterly butterly" girl), was created in 1966 by Sylvester daCunha and the artist Eustace Fernandes. Amul's topical advertisements on current events are among the longest-running ad campaigns in the world.
Its slogans include "Utterly Butterly Delicious" and "The Taste of India".
It is one of India's largest food brands.
