Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Painters

Detailed Solution

Explanation

Jamini Roy, Amrita Sher-Gil and Nandalal Bose were three of the most important Indian painters of the 20th century. All three are among the "Nine Masters", the artists whose works have been declared national art treasures by the Government of India.

Jamini Roy (1887-1972) was born in the Bankura district of West Bengal. He was trained in the Western academic style, but later turned to the folk art of Bengal, especially the Kalighat paintings and the art of village artisans. He created a simple, bold style with strong outlines and flat, bright colours, using natural pigments. His subjects included village life, mothers and children, Santhal women and scenes from the epics. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1955.

Amrita Sher-Gil (1913-1941) was born in Budapest, Hungary, to an Indian Sikh father and a Hungarian mother, and studied art in Paris. After returning to India, she painted the lives of ordinary Indians, especially women, combining Western techniques with Indian themes. Her famous works include "Three Girls", "Bride's Toilet" and "Village Scene". She died at the age of just 28.

Nandalal Bose (1882-1966) was a student of Abanindranath Tagore and a leading artist of the Bengal School. He became the head of Kala Bhavana, the art school at Santiniketan. He painted the Haripura posters for the Congress session of 1938 at the request of Mahatma Gandhi, and he and his students illustrated the original manuscript of the Constitution of India. He also designed the emblems of the Bharat Ratna and Padma awards.

Other Nine Masters include Raja Ravi Varma, Rabindranath Tagore, Abanindranath Tagore and Gaganendranath Tagore.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination. Practise the paintings, crafts and tribes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
