Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Head

Detailed Solution

The Mysore Peta is a traditional turban (headgear) of Mysuru (Mysore) in Karnataka. It was originally worn by the Wodeyar kings of Mysore and the members of their royal court, and it later became a symbol of honour, respect and the culture of the region.

The Mysore Peta is made of fine silk, usually in colours such as cream, white, gold and red, with a golden border (zari), and it is wrapped in a special style, with folds on the front and a distinctive shape. It was traditionally made by skilled craftsmen of Mysuru, and it has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Karnataka's culture.

In the past, the Mysore Peta was worn by the royal family and the officials of the court, especially on ceremonial occasions, such as the Mysuru Dasara durbar. Later, it was adopted by scholars, officials and respected members of society as a mark of dignity. The famous engineer Sir M. Visvesvaraya, who was the Dewan of Mysore and received the Bharat Ratna in 1955, was often seen wearing the Mysore Peta. Today, it is presented to distinguished guests, such as political leaders, scholars and artists, as a mark of respect and honour at public functions, especially in Karnataka. It is also worn by bridegrooms at weddings and by performers at cultural events. The Mysuru University has adopted the peta as part of its convocation dress.

Different regions of India have their own traditional headgear, such as the Rajasthani "pagri" and "safa", the Marathi "pheta", the Kodava "mandethuni", the Sikh turban (dastar), the Himachali cap and the Assamese "jaapi" (a hat made of bamboo and palm leaves).

Karnataka is also famous for its Mysore silk sarees, Ilkal sarees, Channapatna toys, Mysore sandalwood and Bidriware, many of which have Geographical Indication (GI) tags.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Shoulders are covered by shawls and the angavastram, not the peta.
  • ✗Waist is where the cummerbund or sash is worn.
  • ✗Feet wear traditional footwear such as Kolhapuri chappals.

Quick tip

Remember: The Mysore Peta = the traditional silk turban of the Wodeyar court of Mysuru, worn on the head as a symbol of honour,, Sir M. Visvesvaraya.

Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Paintings, Crafts, Dress & Tribes, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's traditional painting styles (such as Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra, Kalamkari, Gond and Tanjore), handicrafts and textiles, traditional dresses, and the major tribes of each state and their customs. It also includes Geographical Indication (GI) tags given to crafts and products. Questions usually ask which state a painting or craft belongs to, which tribe lives in a region, or what a traditional dress is called. Warli belongs to Maharashtra, Madhubani to Bihar, Pattachitra to Odisha and West Bengal, and Gond art to Madhya Pradesh. Grouping tribes by state, and noting the largest tribe of key states (such as the Bhils and the Santhals), helps with elimination. Practise the paintings, crafts and tribes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT.
