Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Andaman Sea

Detailed Solution

Barren Island lies in the Andaman Sea, about 135 km north-east of Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair), the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is the only confirmed active volcano in India and in South Asia.

About Barren Island:

  • It is a small island, about 3 km across, with an area of about 8 square km.
  • It is uninhabited, except for a few goats and other animals, and is part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Union Territory.
  • The volcano rises from the sea floor at a depth of about 2,250 metres; only the top part, about 350 metres high, is above sea level.

Volcanic activity:

  • Its first recorded eruption was in 1787.
  • After a long period of quiet, it became active again in 1991, and has erupted many times since, including in 2017 and later years, with ash plumes and lava flows.

Why there is a volcano here:

  • The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie along a zone where the Indian Plate moves beneath the Burma microplate (part of the Eurasian Plate).
  • As the plate sinks into the mantle, it melts, and the magma rises to form volcanoes.
  • This volcanic arc continues southward into Indonesia, which has many active volcanoes.

Narcondam Island:

  • Narcondam Island, also in the Andaman Sea, about 140 km north of Barren Island, is a dormant volcano.
  • It is the only home of the Narcondam hornbill, an endangered bird found nowhere else.

About the Andaman Sea:

  • It lies to the east of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, bordered by Myanmar and Thailand on the east and Indonesia's Sumatra to the south.
  • It is connected to the Bay of Bengal and leads to the Strait of Malacca.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Arabian Sea and the Lakshadweep Sea lie to the west of India.
  • ✗The Gulf of Mannar lies between India and Sri Lanka.

Quick tip

Remember: Barren Island (Andaman Sea) = India's only active volcano; Narcondam = dormant volcano with an endemic hornbill.

Physical Features of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Physical Features of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's location and extent, its neighbours and boundary lines, and its physiographic divisions: the Himalayas, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the coastal plains and the islands, along with important mountain passes, peaks and hill ranges. Questions often ask which states the Tropic of Cancer passes through, the southernmost point of India (Indira Point), the highest peak in India (Kangchenjunga), and which pass connects which regions. India shares its longest land border with Bangladesh. Learning the Himalayan ranges from north to south (Himadri, Himachal and Shiwaliks) is also useful.
