Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Duncan Passage

Detailed Solution

The Duncan Passage is a strait in the Andaman Islands that separates South Andaman (along with Rutland Island) in the north from Little Andaman in the south. It connects the Bay of Bengal on the west with the Andaman Sea on the east.

Features of the Duncan Passage:

  • It is about 48 km wide.
  • It contains several small islands, rocks and reefs, such as the Cinque Islands, Passage Island and North and South Brother islands.
  • It is an important route for ships moving between Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair) and the southern islands or the Andaman Sea.
  • Navigation can be difficult because of shallow areas and strong currents.

Geography of the Andaman group:

  • The Andaman Islands include North Andaman, Middle Andaman and South Andaman (together called Great Andaman), along with Little Andaman, Baratang, Rutland and many other islands.
  • Little Andaman is the fourth largest island of the Andaman group and is home to the Onge tribe.
  • Saddle Peak (about 732 metres) on North Andaman is the highest point of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Water passages around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (north to south):

  • Coco Channel: between the Coco Islands (Myanmar) and North Andaman.
  • Duncan Passage: between South Andaman and Little Andaman.
  • Ten Degree Channel: between Little Andaman and Car Nicobar (the Andaman and Nicobar groups).

Sri Vijaya Puram:

  • Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, was renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in September 2024.
  • It is the site of the Cellular Jail, where many freedom fighters were imprisoned during British rule.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Ten Degree Channel lies farther south, between Little Andaman and Car Nicobar.
  • ✗The Coco Channel lies north of North Andaman.
  • ✗The Macpherson Strait separates South Andaman from Rutland Island.

Quick tip

Remember: Duncan Passage = South Andaman and Little Andaman; Ten Degree Channel = Little Andaman and Car Nicobar.

This question tests your understanding of Physical Features of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's location and extent, its neighbours and boundary lines, and its physiographic divisions: the Himalayas, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the coastal plains and the islands, along with important mountain passes, peaks and hill ranges. Questions often ask which states the Tropic of Cancer passes through, the southernmost point of India (Indira Point), the highest peak in India (Kangchenjunga), and which pass connects which regions. India shares its longest land border with Bangladesh. Learning the Himalayan ranges from north to south (Himadri, Himachal and Shiwaliks) is also useful.
