Answer: Option A โ Nepal
Detailed Solution
Dhaulagiri is a mountain massif in north-central Nepal. Its highest summit, Dhaulagiri I (8,167 metres), is the seventh-highest mountain in the world.
About Dhaulagiri:
- Its name comes from Sanskrit: "dhavala" (white, dazzling) and "giri" (mountain), meaning "White Mountain".
- It lies in the Dhaulagiri Himal range, in the Gandaki Province (Myagdi district) of Nepal.
- It lies entirely within Nepal.
The deep "Kali Gandaki Gorge" separates the Dhaulagiri massif from the Annapurna massif to the east. The gorge is often described as one of the deepest in the world.
For about 30 years (from 1808 to 1838), Dhaulagiri was thought to be the highest mountain in the world, after it was surveyed by the British.
It was first climbed on 13 May 1960 by a Swiss-Austrian expedition, including Kurt Diemberger, Peter Diener, Ernst Forrer and Albin Schelbert, with the Sherpas Nawang Dorje and Nima Dorje. The expedition used a small aircraft, the "Yeti", to carry supplies, the first time a plane was used for Himalayan mountaineering.
It is considered one of the more difficult 8,000-metre peaks because of avalanches and steep slopes.
The 8,000-metre peaks:
There are 14 mountains in the world higher than 8,000 metres, all in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranges.
In order of height: Everest (Nepal-China), K2 (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir-China), Kangchenjunga (Nepal-India), Lhotse (Nepal-China), Makalu (Nepal-China), Cho Oyu (Nepal-China), Dhaulagiri I (Nepal), Manaslu (Nepal), Nanga Parbat (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir), Annapurna I (Nepal), Gasherbrum I, Broad Peak, Gasherbrum II and Shishapangma (China).
Reinhold Messner of Italy was the first to climb all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres (1986), without supplementary oxygen.
Arjun Vajpai and others from India have climbed several of these peaks.
Why not the other options?
- โIndia has peaks like Kangchenjunga and Nanda Devi.
- โBhutan's highest mountain is Gangkhar Puensum, the highest unclimbed mountain in the world.
- โPakistan has K2 and Nanga Parbat.
Quick tip
Remember: Dhaulagiri ("White Mountain") = Nepal (8,167 m; seventh-highest; first climbed 1960 by a Swiss-Austrian team; Kali Gandaki gorge separates it from Annapurna); 14 peaks above 8,000 m; Messner = first to climb all (1986).

Physical Features of India โ Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Physical Features of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's location and extent, its neighbours and boundary lines, and its physiographic divisions: the Himalayas, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the coastal plains and the islands, along with important mountain passes, peaks and hill ranges. Questions often ask which states the Tropic of Cancer passes through, the southernmost point of India (Indira Point), the highest peak in India (Kangchenjunga), and which pass connects which regions. India shares its longest land border with Bangladesh. Learning the Himalayan ranges from north to south (Himadri, Himachal and Shiwaliks) is also useful.
