Answer: Option C — Kamet
Detailed Solution
Kamet (7,756 metres) is the second-highest mountain in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, and the third-highest in India (after Kangchenjunga and Nanda Devi).
About Kamet:
- It is located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, close to the border with Tibet (China).
- It is part of the Zaskar Range, north of the main Himalayan range.
- It is surrounded by three other high peaks: Abi Gamin, Mana and Mukut Parbat.
- Because of its remote location, it was difficult to reach in early expeditions.
Climbing history:
It was first climbed on 21 June 1931 by Frank Smythe, Eric Shipton, R. L. Holdsworth and the Sherpa Lewa, as part of a British expedition.
It was the highest summit reached by humans until 1936.
Smythe and his team, on their way back, discovered the beautiful "Valley of Flowers" in the Bhyundar valley. Frank Smythe later wrote the book "The Valley of Flowers" (1938).
The first Indian ascent was in 1955.
Other high peaks of Uttarakhand:
- Nanda Devi (7,816 m): the highest.
- Abi Gamin (7,355 m).
- Mana Peak (7,272 m).
- Chaukhamba I (7,138 m): near Badrinath, at the head of the Gangotri glacier.
- Trishul (7,120 m): first 7,000-m peak to be climbed (1907, by Tom Longstaff).
- Dunagiri (7,066 m).
- Panchachuli (6,904 m): a group of five peaks in Kumaon.
- Bandarpunch (6,316 m): near the source of the Yamuna.
- Shivling (6,543 m): near Gaumukh.
Important passes and glaciers:
- Mana Pass: connects Uttarakhand with Tibet; near Mana, called the "First Indian Village" (earlier the "last village").
- Gangotri Glacier: source of the Bhagirathi river (at Gaumukh).
- Satopanth Glacier: source of the Alaknanda river.
- The Bhagirathi and Alaknanda meet at Devprayag to form the Ganga.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Trishul is a high peak near Nanda Devi, but lower than Kamet.
- ✗Chaukhamba is a group of peaks near Badrinath, lower than Kamet.
- ✗Bandarpunch is near the source of the Yamuna and is much lower.
Quick tip
Remember: Kamet (7,756 m) = second-highest in Garhwal and third-highest in India (Zaskar Range; first climbed 1931 by Frank Smythe, who then described the Valley of Flowers); Trishul = first 7,000-m peak climbed (1907).

Physical Features of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Physical Features of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's location and extent, its neighbours and boundary lines, and its physiographic divisions: the Himalayas, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Indian Desert, the coastal plains and the islands, along with important mountain passes, peaks and hill ranges. Questions often ask which states the Tropic of Cancer passes through, the southernmost point of India (Indira Point), the highest peak in India (Kangchenjunga), and which pass connects which regions. India shares its longest land border with Bangladesh. Learning the Himalayan ranges from north to south (Himadri, Himachal and Shiwaliks) is also useful.
