Detailed Solution
The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) is located on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg in New Delhi.
About INSA:
- It was founded on 7 January 1935 in Calcutta as the "National Institute of Sciences of India" (NISI).
- It was set up to promote science in India and to represent Indian science at international forums.
- Its first President was Sir Lewis Leigh Fermor, a geologist and Director of the Geological Survey of India.
- Its headquarters moved from Calcutta to New Delhi in 1951.
In 1968, the Government of India recognised it as the body to represent India at the International Council for Science (now the International Science Council), and in 1970 it was renamed the "Indian National Science Academy".
It elects "Fellows" for their outstanding contributions to science; being an INSA Fellow is a high honour for Indian scientists.
It gives many awards and medals, such as the "INSA Medal for Young Scientists".
It publishes the "Proceedings of the Indian National Science Academy" and the "Indian Journal of History of Science".
It promotes the history of science in India and science education.
It is funded mainly by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
India's three main science academies:
The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI): Prayagraj, 1930 (oldest); founded by Meghnad Saha.
Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc): Bengaluru, 1934; founded by C. V. Raman.
Indian National Science Academy (INSA): New Delhi, 1935.
Other important science bodies:
- Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR): founded in September 1942; headquarters New Delhi.
- Department of Science and Technology (DST): set up in 1971.
- Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB): set up in 2009; it has been subsumed in the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), created by the ANRF Act, 2023.
- Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA): founded in 1914 in Kolkata; it organised the annual Indian Science Congress.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Bengaluru has the Indian Academy of Sciences.
- ✗Kolkata was INSA's first home, but it moved to New Delhi in 1951.
- ✗Chennai has the Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
Quick tip

This question tests your understanding of Scientific Research Institutes & Organisations, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's scientific research institutes and organisations, such as BARC, ISRO, DRDO, CSIR and its laboratories, ICAR and ICMR, and specialised research centres for crops, animals, oceans and medicine, along with where they are located. Questions usually ask where an institute is located and what it researches. For example, BARC is in Mumbai, the Central Rice Research Institute is in Cuttack, and the National Institute of Oceanography is in Goa. A table of institute, city and field is the best way to revise this topic. Practise the research institutes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
