Answer: Option D — 1 January 1966
Detailed Solution
The CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) was founded on 1 January 1966. Its headquarters is at Dona Paula, Goa.
About the NIO:
- It is one of the laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
- It was set up after the "International Indian Ocean Expedition" (1959-1965), a major international scientific study of the Indian Ocean in which India took part.
Its first Director was the marine scientist Dr. N. K. Panikkar.
It has regional centres at Kochi, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam.
Its research covers physical, chemical, biological and geological oceanography, and marine instrumentation.
It studies the Indian Ocean, monsoons, ocean currents, marine life, sea-level rise, coastal pollution and seabed minerals (such as polymetallic nodules).
It operates research vessels, such as "RV Sindhu Sankalp" and "RV Sindhu Sadhana".
It contributed to India's first expedition to Antarctica (1981-82).
Other ocean-related institutions in India:
- Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES): set up in 2006; it handles ocean, atmosphere and earth sciences.
- National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR): Goa (1998); manages India's Antarctic and Arctic stations.
- Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS): Hyderabad (1999); runs the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre.
- National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT): Chennai; it is developing "Matsya-6000", a crewed submersible for India's "Samudrayaan" deep ocean mission.
- Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM): Pune.
India's polar research stations:
- Antarctica: Dakshin Gangotri (1983, the first; now a supply base), Maitri (1989) and Bharati (2012).
- Arctic: Himadri (2008) at Ny-Alesund, Svalbard, Norway.
- India launched the "Deep Ocean Mission" in 2021.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1 January 1957 is not related.
- ✗15 August 1969 is when ISRO was established.
- ✗1 April 1981 is not related.
Quick tip
Remember: National Institute of Oceanography = Dona Paula, Goa (CSIR; founded 1 January 1966 after the International Indian Ocean Expedition; first director N. K. Panikkar); NCPOR = Goa; INCOIS = Hyderabad; NIOT = Chennai.

Scientific Research Institutes & Organisations — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Scientific Research Institutes & Organisations, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's scientific research institutes and organisations, such as BARC, ISRO, DRDO, CSIR and its laboratories, ICAR and ICMR, and specialised research centres for crops, animals, oceans and medicine, along with where they are located. Questions usually ask where an institute is located and what it researches. For example, BARC is in Mumbai, the Central Rice Research Institute is in Cuttack, and the National Institute of Oceanography is in Goa. A table of institute, city and field is the best way to revise this topic. Practise the research institutes questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
