Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Thanjavur

Detailed Solution

The Tamil University is located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.

About the Tamil University:

It was established in 1981 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, under Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran, through the Tamil University Act, 1982.

It was set up to conduct advanced research and higher studies in the Tamil language, literature, culture, arts and sciences.

It was the first university in India devoted mainly to research in one language.

Its campus covers about 1,000 acres. When seen from above, its buildings are arranged so that they spell out "Tamil Nadu" in Tamil letters, or follow the map of Tamil Nadu, according to its design.

It has departments for Tamil literature, linguistics, manuscripts, epigraphy, archaeology, music, drama, sculpture, Siddha medicine, architecture, industries and many other subjects.

It has a large library and a manuscript collection, and it publishes research works and dictionaries.

Why Thanjavur:

  • Thanjavur was the capital of the great Chola kings, such as Rajaraja Chola I, who built the Brihadeeswarar (Big) Temple, completed in 1010 CE.
  • It is a major centre of Tamil culture, Carnatic music, Bharatanatyam and Thanjavur painting.
  • It has the Saraswathi Mahal Library, one of the oldest libraries in Asia.

About the Tamil language:

  • Tamil was the first language to be declared a "classical language" of India, in 2004.
  • It is one of the oldest living languages in the world, with literature dating back more than 2,000 years, including Sangam literature and the "Tolkappiyam" (the oldest Tamil grammar).
  • It is an official language of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and also of Sri Lanka and Singapore.
  • The Central Institute of Classical Tamil (CICT) is located in Chennai.
  • The World Tamil Conference is held from time to time; the first was held in Kuala Lumpur in 1966.

Other universities of Tamil Nadu:

  • University of Madras (Chennai, 1857): one of the three oldest modern universities in India.
  • Madurai Kamaraj University (Madurai).
  • Bharathiar University (Coimbatore).
  • Annamalai University (Chidambaram).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Madurai has the Madurai Kamaraj University.
  • ✗Chennai has the University of Madras and the Central Institute of Classical Tamil.
  • ✗Coimbatore has the Bharathiar University.

Quick tip

Remember: Tamil University = Thanjavur (1981, under MGR; campus laid out to spell or map "Tamil Nadu"); Tamil = first classical language (2004); CICT = Chennai; University of Madras = 1857.
