Detailed Solution
The Ghataprabha, Malaprabha, Bhima, Koyna, Musi, Tungabhadra, Dudhganga and Panchganga are among the tributaries of the Krishna, the second largest east-flowing river of peninsular India.
Course of the Krishna:
- It rises in the Western Ghats in Maharashtra, at a height of about 1,300 metres.
- It is about 1,400 km long.
- It flows east through Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
- It forms a fertile delta and enters the Bay of Bengal near Hamsaladeevi in Andhra Pradesh.
Important tributaries:
- Koyna: rises in the Western Ghats in Maharashtra; the Koyna Dam is one of India's largest hydroelectric projects.
- Bhima: the longest tributary of the Krishna, rising in the Western Ghats near Bhimashankar; Pandharpur, a major pilgrimage centre, is on its banks.
Ghataprabha and Malaprabha: rise in the Western Ghats and join the Krishna in Karnataka. The Gokak Falls are on the Ghataprabha.
Tungabhadra: formed by the union of the Tunga and Bhadra rivers in Karnataka; the Tungabhadra Dam is at Hosapete, and the ruins of Hampi (Vijayanagara) lie on its banks.
Musi: flows through Hyderabad and joins the Krishna in Telangana.
Dams on the Krishna:
- Almatti Dam in Karnataka.
- Srisailam Dam, on the border of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
- The Prakasam Barrage at Vijayawada.
Water disputes:
The Krishna Water Disputes Tribunals (1969 and 2004) were set up to resolve disputes among Maharashtra, Karnataka and the then united Andhra Pradesh. After the formation of Telangana, disputes between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana continue.
Cities on the Krishna:
Sangli (Maharashtra) and Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh).
The Krishna-Godavari delta:
Together with the Godavari delta, it forms one of India's most important rice-growing regions, and the offshore Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin has large natural gas reserves.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Godavari, Kaveri and Mahanadi have their own sets of tributaries; the rivers listed in the question all belong to the Krishna system.
Quick tip
Remember: Krishna's tributaries = Koyna, Bhima (longest), Ghataprabha, Malaprabha, Tungabhadra, Musi.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
