Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Tapi

Detailed Solution

The Tapi (also spelt Tapti) river rises near Multai in the Betul district of Madhya Pradesh, in the Satpura Range. The name Multai comes from "Mul-Tapi", meaning the source of the Tapi; a sacred tank there marks the origin.

Course of the Tapi:

  • It is about 724 km long.
  • It flows westward through Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
  • It flows through a long trough between the Satpura Range to the north and the Ajanta and Satmala hills to the south.
  • It enters the Arabian Sea through the Gulf of Khambhat, near Surat in Gujarat.

Basin:

  • The Tapi basin covers about 65,000 square km, mostly in Maharashtra, with the rest in Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
  • Its main tributaries include the Purna (the largest), Girna, Panjhra, Waghur, Bori and Aner.
  • Projects on the Tapi: several dams and weirs, such as the Hathnur Dam in Maharashtra, have been built on it.

Surat:

Surat, a major city on the banks of the Tapi, is famous for diamond cutting and polishing and for its textile (synthetic fabric) industry.

West-flowing rivers:

The Tapi is the second largest west-flowing river of peninsular India.

Religious significance:

The Tapi is considered the daughter of the Sun god, Surya, in Hindu mythology.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Narmada rises farther east, in the Maikal hills.
  • ✗The Mahi rises in the Vindhya range of Madhya Pradesh.
  • ✗The Wainganga rises in the Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh and is a tributary of the Godavari system.

Quick tip

Remember: Tapi rises at Multai (Betul, MP; "Mul-Tapi" = source of the Tapi), flows west past Surat into the Gulf of Khambhat.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east. Practise the rivers, lakes and dams of India questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT.
