Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Sharavati

Detailed Solution

The Jog Falls (also called Gerusoppa Falls) are formed by the Sharavati river, which plunges about 253 metres (830 feet) in the Shivamogga (Shimoga) district of Karnataka, near the border with Uttara Kannada district.

Features of Jog Falls:

  • It is one of the highest plunge waterfalls in India, in which the water falls in a single vertical drop without touching the rock face.
  • The falls consist of four distinct streams, each with its own popular name.
  • The falls are most spectacular during the south-west monsoon (July to September), when the river is in full flow.
  • In the dry season, the flow is much reduced, partly because water is stored in dams upstream.

About the Sharavati river:

  • It rises at Ambutirtha in the Thirthahalli taluk of Shivamogga district in the Western Ghats.
  • It flows north-west and drains into the Arabian Sea at Honnavar in Uttara Kannada district.
  • It is about 128 km long.
  • It is a west-flowing river, short and swift, like most rivers that rise in the Western Ghats and flow to the Arabian Sea.

Hydroelectric projects:

  • The Linganamakki Dam on the Sharavati, built in 1964, stores water for the Sharavati Hydroelectric Project, one of the major sources of electricity in Karnataka.
  • The older Mahatma Gandhi Hydroelectric Station is located near the falls.

Wildlife:

  • The Sharavati Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, home to the endangered lion-tailed macaque, lies in the river's catchment.
  • Other famous waterfalls: Kunchikal Falls on the Varahi river (Karnataka) and Athirappilly Falls on the Chalakudy river (Kerala).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Varahi forms the Kunchikal Falls.
  • ✗The Tungabhadra flows east across the Deccan plateau.
  • ✗The Kali (Kalinadi) is another west-flowing river of coastal Karnataka.

Quick tip

Remember: Jog Falls (Gerusoppa) = Sharavati river, Shivamogga district, Karnataka; about 253 m plunge.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
