Answer: Option B ā Aravalli Range of Rajasthan
Detailed Solution
The Sabarmati river rises in the Aravalli hills of southern Rajasthan. It flows south-west through Gujarat and empties into the Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay) of the Arabian Sea.
Course of the Sabarmati:
- Its length is about 371 km, of which most lies in Gujarat.
- It flows through Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad before reaching the Gulf of Khambhat.
- Its main tributaries include the Wakal, Hathmati, Sei, Harnav and Vatrak.
- The Dharoi Dam, built on the Sabarmati in Mehsana district, supplies water for irrigation and drinking.
Sabarmati Ashram:
- Mahatma Gandhi set up the Satyagraha Ashram (later called the Sabarmati Ashram) on the banks of the Sabarmati in Ahmedabad in 1917.
- It was from here that he began the Dandi March (Salt Satyagraha) on 12 March 1930.
- The ashram was Gandhi's home until 1930, and it is now a national monument and museum.
Sabarmati Riverfront:
- The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project in Ahmedabad has developed promenades, parks and public spaces along both banks of the river.
- Water from the Narmada canal is released into the Sabarmati to keep it flowing through the city throughout the year.
West-flowing rivers of India:
- Most peninsular rivers flow east into the Bay of Bengal, but a few flow west into the Arabian Sea.
- Important west-flowing rivers include the Narmada, Tapi, Sabarmati, Mahi and the short swift rivers of the Western Ghats.
- The Sabarmati and Mahi rivers of Gujarat drain into the Gulf of Khambhat.
Rivers of Gujarat:
Narmada, Tapi, Sabarmati and Mahi are the main rivers.
Why not the other options?
- āThe Western Ghats are the source of rivers such as the Godavari and Krishna.
- āThe Satpura and Vindhya ranges are the sources of other central Indian rivers.
Quick tip
Remember: Sabarmati rises in the Aravallis (Rajasthan), flows past Ahmedabad (Sabarmati Ashram, 1917) into the Gulf of Khambhat.

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
