Answer: Option C — Ken-Betwa link project
Detailed Solution
The Ken-Betwa Link Project is the first river-interlinking project to be taken up under the National Perspective Plan for river linking. It aims to transfer surplus water from the Ken river to the Betwa river basin, both tributaries of the Yamuna, in the drought-prone Bundelkhand region.
Key features:
- A dam, the Daudhan Dam, about 77 metres high, will be built on the Ken river in the Panna district of Madhya Pradesh.
- A link canal about 221 km long will carry water from the Ken to the Betwa basin.
- The project will also include hydroelectric power generation and other dams in the Betwa basin.
- It was approved by the Union Cabinet in December 2021, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone at Khajuraho on 25 December 2024, the birth centenary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
- The project is estimated to cost about 44,600 crore rupees, with the Centre bearing most of the cost.
Benefits:
- It is expected to irrigate about 10.6 lakh hectares in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
- It will provide drinking water to about 62 lakh people.
- It will generate hydroelectric and solar power.
Concerns:
- About 98 square km of the Panna Tiger Reserve will be submerged or affected, raising concerns about tigers, vultures and gharials (the Ken Gharial Sanctuary lies downstream).
- Thousands of trees will be cut, and several villages will be displaced.
- Critics have questioned whether the Ken actually has surplus water.
National river-linking plan:
- The National Perspective Plan (1980) has 30 links: 16 in the peninsular component and 14 in the Himalayan component.
- The National Water Development Agency (NWDA) prepares detailed reports.
- Other priority links include the Par-Tapi-Narmada and Damanganga-Pinjal links (western India) and the Godavari-Kaveri link.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Godavari-Krishna link has been achieved locally by a state project in Andhra Pradesh, not as the first project of the national plan.
- ✗The Par-Tapi-Narmada and Damanganga-Pinjal links are proposed links.
Quick tip
Remember: First river-link project under the national plan = Ken-Betwa (Bundelkhand, MP-UP); Daudhan Dam; foundation stone 25 December 2024.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
