Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option D — Tapi
Detailed Solution
The Ukai Dam is built across the Tapi (Tapti) river near the village of Ukai in the Tapi district of Gujarat, about 100 km from Surat.
Key facts:
- It is an earth-fill and masonry dam, about 4.9 km long and 80.7 metres high.
- Construction was completed in 1972.
- Its reservoir, the Vallabh Sagar, is the largest reservoir in Gujarat by storage capacity.
- The project provides irrigation, hydroelectric power (about 850 MW, including a hydro station) and flood control.
- It supplies water to the Ukai Thermal Power Station and to the city of Surat.
Floods in Surat:
- Surat lies on the Tapi near its mouth and has suffered serious floods.
- In August 2006, heavy rains in the catchment forced authorities to release a large volume of water from the Ukai Dam, which flooded most of Surat and caused major damage.
- After this, better flood forecasting and dam management systems were introduced.
About the Tapi river:
- It rises at Multai in the Betul district of Madhya Pradesh, in the Satpura Range.
- It flows westward through Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat, about 724 km, and enters the Gulf of Khambhat near Surat.
- It flows through a rift valley, parallel to the Narmada.
- Its main tributaries include the Purna, Girna, Panjhra and Waghur.
Other dams of Gujarat:
Sardar Sarovar (Narmada), Dharoi (Sabarmati), Dantiwada (Banas) and Shetrunji.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Narmada has the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat.
- ✗The Sabarmati has the Dharoi Dam.
- ✗The Banas has the Dantiwada Dam in Gujarat.
Quick tip
Remember: Ukai Dam = Tapi (Gujarat), largest reservoir of Gujarat (Vallabh Sagar); Surat lies on the Tapi.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
