Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Godavari

Detailed Solution

The Maner, Pravara and Indravati are among the many tributaries of the Godavari, the largest river system of peninsular India.

Important tributaries of the Godavari:

  • Right-bank tributaries: Pravara, Manjira, Maner and others.
  • Left-bank tributaries: Purna, Pranhita (formed by the Wardha, Wainganga and Penganga), Indravati and Sabari.

Pravara:

It rises in the Western Ghats in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra and joins the Godavari near Pravara Sangam.

Manjira:

It rises in Maharashtra and flows through Karnataka and Telangana; the Nizam Sagar and Singur dams are built on it.

Maner:

It rises in the Telangana region and joins the Godavari near Manthani. The Lower Manair Dam at Karimnagar is built on it.

Pranhita:

It is the largest tributary of the Godavari by volume of water and forms part of the Maharashtra-Telangana border. It drains about 34 percent of the Godavari basin.

Indravati:

It rises in the Kalahandi district of Odisha, flows west through the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, and joins the Godavari on the Maharashtra-Telangana-Chhattisgarh border.

Sabari:

It flows through Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh before joining the Godavari.

The Godavari basin:

  • It is spread over seven states: Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Karnataka.
  • Maharashtra has the largest share of the basin, close to half.

Projects:

The Polavaram Project (Andhra Pradesh), the Jayakwadi Dam (Maharashtra) and the Sriram Sagar Project are important projects in the basin.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Krishna, Mahanadi and Kaveri have their own tributaries, which are different.

Quick tip

Remember: Godavari tributaries = Pravara, Manjira, Maner (right bank); Purna, Pranhita, Indravati, Sabari (left bank).

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
