Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Ravi

Detailed Solution

The Chamera hydroelectric projects are built on the Ravi river in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. They are operated by NHPC Limited.

Chamera projects:

  • Chamera-I: about 540 MW, commissioned in 1994.
  • Chamera-II: about 300 MW, commissioned in 2004.
  • Chamera-III: about 231 MW, commissioned in 2012.
  • The Chamera-I reservoir, the Chamera Lake, is also a tourist spot.

About the Ravi river:

  • It rises in the Bara Bhangal area of the Kangra district in the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges of Himachal Pradesh.
  • It flows north-west through the Chamba valley, between the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges.
  • It forms part of the boundary between Punjab (India) and Jammu, and then flows into Pakistan, where Lahore lies on its banks.
  • It joins the Chenab in Pakistan.
  • Its length is about 720 km.

Ancient names:

In the Rigveda, the Ravi was called the Parushni. The famous "Battle of Ten Kings" (Dasarajna) was fought on its banks.

The Greeks called it the Hydraotes.

Historical importance:

At the Lahore session of the Indian National Congress in December 1929, held on the banks of the Ravi, Jawaharlal Nehru hoisted the flag and the "Purna Swaraj" (complete independence) resolution was adopted.

Other projects on the Ravi:

  • The Ranjit Sagar Dam (Thein Dam), on the Punjab-Jammu and Kashmir border, is a multipurpose project.
  • The Shahpur Kandi project, below it, was completed recently to use India's share of the Ravi waters fully.

Indus Waters Treaty:

The Ravi is one of the three eastern rivers (with the Beas and Sutlej) whose waters were allotted to India under the treaty of 1960.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Beas has the Pong and Pandoh dams.
  • ✗The Sutlej has the Bhakra and other dams.
  • ✗The Chenab has projects such as Salal and Baglihar.

Quick tip

Remember: Chamera Dam = Ravi (Chamba, HP); Ravi = Parushni (Rigveda); Lahore lies on the Ravi.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
