The Bansagar multipurpose project in Madhya Pradesh is built on which river?
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option A — Son
Detailed Solution
The Bansagar Dam is built on the Son river near Deolond in the Shahdol district of Madhya Pradesh. It is a multipurpose project for irrigation and hydroelectric power.
Key facts about the Bansagar project:
It is a joint project of three states: Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, which share its cost and benefits. Madhya Pradesh bears half the cost and gets half the benefits; Uttar Pradesh and Bihar each get a quarter.
Work began in the late 1970s, and the dam was completed in about 2006.
It was named after Banabhatta, the 7th-century Sanskrit poet and author of Harshacharita and Kadambari, who is associated with this region.
It irrigates large areas in all three states and generates hydroelectric power.
About the Son river:
- The Son rises near Amarkantak in the Maikal hills of Madhya Pradesh, close to the source of the Narmada.
- It flows north and then north-east through Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand (briefly) and Bihar.
- It joins the Ganga near Patna (around Maner and Danapur).
- It is about 780 km long and is the largest southern (right-bank) tributary of the Ganga.
- Its sands are golden in colour, and the river is sometimes called "Sonbhadra" or associated with "gold" (sona).
Its main tributaries include the Rihand, Gopad, Banas (of MP), Johilla and North Koel. The Rihand Dam (Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar), one of India's largest artificial lakes, is on the Rihand.
The Indrapuri Barrage at Dehri-on-Sone in Bihar is one of the longest barrages in India.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Ken has the Daudhan Dam (Ken-Betwa link) and flows past Panna and Banda.
- ✗The Tons (of central India) is a tributary of the Ganga, known for the Purwa Falls.
- ✗The Narmada has the Sardar Sarovar, Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar dams.
Quick tip
Remember: Bansagar = Son (Shahdol, MP), shared by MP, UP and Bihar; Rihand Dam = Rihand, a Son tributary.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
