Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — Ramganga
Detailed Solution
The Kalagarh Dam, also called the Ramganga Dam, is built on the Ramganga river near Kalagarh in the Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand, close to the border with Uttar Pradesh. It was completed in 1974.
Key facts about the dam:
- It is an earth-and-rockfill embankment dam, about 128 metres high.
- It is a multipurpose project, providing irrigation for western Uttar Pradesh, hydroelectric power and some flood control.
- It also supplies additional water to the Ganga to help support drinking water needs downstream, including for Delhi.
Its reservoir lies partly inside the Jim Corbett National Park, India's first national park (established in 1936 as Hailey National Park). The reservoir attracts many water birds and is a good habitat for crocodiles and fish.
About the Ramganga river:
- The Ramganga (West Ramganga) rises in the Dudhatoli hills of the Garhwal region in Uttarakhand.
- It flows south-west through the Corbett National Park, enters the plains of Uttar Pradesh, and flows past Moradabad and Bareilly.
- It joins the Ganga near Kannauj (Farrukhabad area) in Uttar Pradesh.
- It is about 600 km long and is the first major left-bank tributary of the Ganga after it enters the plains.
📌 Remember
There is another river, the East Ramganga, in Kumaon, which is a tributary of the Sharda (Kali) system.Corbett National Park:
- It was renamed Ramganga National Park in 1954-55 and then Jim Corbett National Park in 1956-57, in honour of the hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett.
- It is where Project Tiger was launched in 1973.
Why not the other options?
- ✗The Kosi of Uttarakhand flows past Ramnagar, near Corbett; it is different from the Kosi of Bihar.
- ✗The Sharda (Kali) has the Tanakpur barrage and the Banbasa barrage.
- ✗The Yamuna has the Hathnikund barrage and the Dakpathar barrage.
Quick tip
Remember: Kalagarh (Ramganga) Dam lies at the edge of Jim Corbett National Park; Ramganga joins the Ganga near Kannauj.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
