The Pookode Lake is located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, about 3 km from Vythiri, at a height of about 770 metres above sea level.

About the Pookode Lake:

  • It is a natural freshwater lake surrounded by evergreen forests and hills of the Western Ghats.
  • It is the only natural freshwater lake in Wayanad and one of the highest freshwater lakes in Kerala.
  • It covers about 8.5 hectares and has a maximum depth of about 6.5 metres.
  • When seen from above, its shape is said to resemble the map of India.
  • It is the source of the Panamaram rivulet, which flows into the Kabini river, a tributary of the Kaveri.
  • The lake is covered with blue lotus flowers in parts.
  • It is home to a freshwater fish called "Pethia pookodensis", which is found only in this lake.
  • Boating facilities and a small aquarium attract tourists.
  • It is managed by the District Tourism Promotion Council of Wayanad.

About Wayanad:

  • It is a hilly district in north-east Kerala, bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
  • It is known for its spice plantations (pepper, cardamom), coffee and tea estates.

Important places include:

  • Edakkal Caves: prehistoric rock engravings, believed to be from the Neolithic period.
  • Chembra Peak: the highest peak in Wayanad, with a heart-shaped lake ("Hridaya Saras") on the way up.
  • Banasura Sagar Dam: the largest earth dam in India and the second-largest in Asia.
  • Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary: part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
  • Kuruva Island: river islands on the Kabini.
  • In July 2024, severe landslides at Mundakkai and Chooralmala in Wayanad killed more than 200 people.

Other lakes of Kerala:

  • Vembanad Lake: the longest lake in India and the largest in Kerala; it hosts the Nehru Trophy Boat Race.
  • Ashtamudi Lake (Kollam): a Ramsar site; its name means "eight branches".
  • Sasthamkotta Lake (Kollam): the largest freshwater lake in Kerala; a Ramsar site.
  • Periyar Lake: formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam, in the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Tamil Nadu has the Ooty and Kodaikanal lakes.
  • ✗Karnataka has the Kukkarahalli and Pampa Sarovar lakes.
  • ✗Goa has the Carambolim Lake.

Quick tip

Remember: Pookode Lake = Wayanad, Kerala (natural freshwater lake shaped like India's map; source of the Panamaram rivulet); Sasthamkotta = largest freshwater lake of Kerala; Vembanad = longest lake in India.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
