Answer: Option A — Dhebar Lake (Jaisamand Lake)
Detailed Solution
Dhebar Lake, also called Jaisamand Lake, in the Udaipur district of Rajasthan, is regarded as the second-largest artificial lake in Asia.
About Dhebar (Jaisamand) Lake:
- It was built by Maharana Jai Singh of Mewar in 1685, by building a marble dam across the Gomati river.
- It is about 50 km south-east of Udaipur city.
When it was built, it was the largest artificial lake in the world. It held that record until the Aswan Dam (Lake Nasser) was built in Egypt.
The marble dam has six cenotaphs (chhatris) and a small Shiva temple; marble elephants stand along the dam.
It has several islands, some of which are inhabited by the Bhil tribe.
The "Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary" surrounds the lake.
The summer palaces of the queens of Udaipur stand on the hills around the lake.
Gobind Sagar, the reservoir of the Bhakra Dam on the Sutlej in Himachal Pradesh, is one of India's largest man-made lakes.
Lakes of Udaipur, the "City of Lakes":
- Pichola Lake: built in 1362 by a Banjara (gypsy) tribesman, later enlarged by Maharana Udai Singh II; the Lake Palace (Jag Niwas) and Jag Mandir are on its islands.
- Fateh Sagar Lake: built by Maharana Fateh Singh; has the Udaipur Solar Observatory on an island.
- Udai Sagar Lake and Rajsamand Lake are also in the region.
- Rajsamand Lake (Rajsamand district): built by Maharana Raj Singh in the 17th century; its embankment has the "Raj Prashasti", the longest inscription in India, carved on marble slabs.
Other lakes of Rajasthan:
- Sambhar Lake: India's largest inland saline lake.
- Ana Sagar Lake, Ajmer: built by Arnoraja (Anaji) Chauhan in the 12th century.
- Pushkar Lake: a sacred Hindu lake with the Brahma Temple.
- Nakki Lake, Mount Abu: Rajasthan's only hill station lake.
- Gadisar Lake, Jaisalmer.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Pichola Lake is a famous lake in Udaipur city but much smaller.
- ✗Fateh Sagar Lake is another lake in Udaipur city.
- ✗Ana Sagar Lake is in Ajmer.
Quick tip
Remember: Dhebar (Jaisamand) Lake = Udaipur district, Rajasthan (built 1685 by Maharana Jai Singh on the Gomati; second-largest artificial lake in Asia); Udaipur = "City of Lakes"; Raj Prashasti = Rajsamand; Sambhar = largest inland salt lake.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
