Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option D — Prayagraj
Detailed Solution
The Yamuna joins the Ganga at Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) in Uttar Pradesh. The confluence is called the Triveni Sangam, because, according to Hindu belief, the mythical, invisible Saraswati river also joins here.
The Triveni Sangam:
- At the Sangam, the muddy, yellowish water of the Ganga and the greener water of the Yamuna can be seen meeting.
- It is one of the holiest places in Hinduism, and bathing at the Sangam is believed to wash away sins.
Kumbh Mela:
- Prayagraj is one of the four places where the Kumbh Mela is held, along with Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik.
- The Maha Kumbh held at Prayagraj in January-February 2025 was attended by more than 60 crore (600 million) people, according to official figures, making it the largest human gathering in history.
- The Magh Mela is held at the Sangam every year.
- The Kumbh Mela was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017.
Prayagraj:
- The city was renamed from Allahabad to Prayagraj in 2018.
- Akbar built a large fort near the Sangam in 1583, which contains the Ashokan pillar with inscriptions of Ashoka and Samudragupta (the Allahabad Pillar).
- The Allahabad High Court, Anand Bhawan (the Nehru family home) and Allahabad University are important landmarks.
About the Yamuna:
- It rises in the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand and flows about 1,376 km.
- It flows through Delhi, Mathura and Agra before reaching Prayagraj.
- Its main tributaries are the Tons, Hindon, Chambal, Sindh, Betwa and Ken.
Other important confluences of the Ganga:
- Devprayag: Bhagirathi and Alaknanda form the Ganga.
- Near Patna: Gandak, and further east, the Kosi.
- In Bangladesh: Ganga (Padma) meets the Brahmaputra (Jamuna).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Varanasi, Kanpur and Haridwar lie on the Ganga, but the Yamuna does not join it there.
Quick tip
Remember: Yamuna joins the Ganga at Prayagraj (Triveni Sangam with the mythical Saraswati); Maha Kumbh 2025.

Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Rivers, Lakes & Dams of India, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's drainage system: the Himalayan rivers (the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems), the peninsular rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Narmada, Tapi and Mahanadi), their tributaries and origins, waterfalls, lakes, and the major dams and multipurpose river projects. Exams ask about the origin of a river, its tributaries, the cities on its banks, and the river on which a dam is built. For example, the Bhakra Nangal Dam is on the Sutlej, the Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi, and the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada. Remember that the Narmada and Tapi flow west into the Arabian Sea, while most peninsular rivers flow east.
