Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Jahangir

Detailed Solution

Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth Sikh Guru, was executed in 1606 on the orders of the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who accused him of helping Prince Khusrau, Jahangir's rebellious eldest son.

About Prince Khusrau's rebellion:

  • Khusrau was Jahangir's eldest son, and a popular prince.
  • Some nobles had wanted him to succeed Akbar instead of his father.
  • Soon after Jahangir's accession in 1605, Khusrau rebelled in 1606 and marched towards Lahore.
  • According to accounts, on his way he visited Guru Arjan Dev at Goindwal, who blessed him (or gave him some money, according to some accounts).
  • Khusrau was defeated, captured and later partially blinded on Jahangir's orders.
  • He died in 1622, while in the custody of his brother Khurram.

The execution of Guru Arjan Dev:

  • Jahangir regarded the Guru's support for Khusrau as treason.
  • He also disliked the growing influence of the Guru, as many Hindus and Muslims were attracted to his teachings.
  • In his memoirs, Jahangir wrote that he had long wanted to stop the Guru's activities.
  • The Guru was fined, and when he refused to pay, he was tortured and died in Lahore in 1606.
  • Sikhs regard him as the first martyr (shaheed) of the Sikh faith.
  • Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore marks the place of his martyrdom.

Effects:

  • His death changed the character of the Sikh community.
  • His son, Guru Hargobind, adopted the policy of "miri and piri" (temporal and spiritual authority), wore two swords, and began to build a Sikh military force.
  • He built the Akal Takht in Amritsar.

About Guru Arjan Dev:

  • He was the son of Guru Ram Das, and became Guru in 1581.
  • He completed the building of the Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar.
  • He compiled the scripture of the Sikhs.
  • He founded the towns of Tarn Taran and Kartarpur.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Akbar, Shah Jahan and Humayun were not Khusrau's father.

Quick tip

Remember: Guru Arjan Dev executed in 1606 by Jahangir (accused of helping Prince Khusrau); first Sikh martyr; Guru Hargobind then adopted "miri and piri".
