Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Hyderabad

Detailed Solution

The National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) has its headquarters at Balanagar, Hyderabad, Telangana.

About the NRSC:

  • It began in 1974 as the "National Remote Sensing Agency" (NRSA), an autonomous society under the Department of Science and Technology.
  • In September 2008, it became a full-fledged centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), under the Department of Space, and was renamed the National Remote Sensing Centre.
  • Its main ground station for receiving satellite data is at Shadnagar, near Hyderabad.
  • It also has regional remote sensing centres at Bengaluru, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Nagpur and New Delhi.

Its functions:

  • It receives, processes, archives and distributes data from Indian and foreign remote sensing satellites.
  • It provides data and services for mapping natural resources, land use, agriculture, forests, water resources, urban planning and the environment.
  • It supports disaster management through the "Decision Support Centre", providing satellite images and maps during floods, cyclones, earthquakes and forest fires.
  • It runs the "Bhuvan" geoportal (2009), ISRO's web-based platform for viewing satellite images and maps of India.
  • It conducts aerial surveys.

About remote sensing in India:

  • Remote sensing means gathering information about the Earth's surface from a distance, using sensors on satellites or aircraft.
  • India's first experimental remote sensing satellite was "Bhaskara-I" (1979).
  • "IRS-1A" (1988) was India's first operational remote sensing satellite.
  • Important series: Resourcesat, Cartosat (for mapping), Oceansat, RISAT (radar imaging) and EOS (Earth Observation Satellites).
  • The "NISAR" satellite, a joint mission of NASA and ISRO, was launched in July 2025.

Other ISRO centres:

  • Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre: Thiruvananthapuram.
  • U R Rao Satellite Centre: Bengaluru.
  • Space Applications Centre: Ahmedabad.
  • Satish Dhawan Space Centre: Sriharikota.
  • Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS): Dehradun (1966); trains people in remote sensing.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Bengaluru has the ISRO headquarters and the U R Rao Satellite Centre.
  • ✗Ahmedabad has the Space Applications Centre.
  • ✗Dehradun has the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing.

Quick tip

Remember: National Remote Sensing Centre = Hyderabad (1974 as NRSA; ISRO centre since 2008; ground station Shadnagar; "Bhuvan" portal); IIRS = Dehradun; SAC = Ahmedabad; IRS-1A = 1988; NISAR = 2025.

Space Technology & ISRO Missions — Preparation

This question tests your understanding of Space Technology & ISRO Missions, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.

This topic covers India's space programme: the history of ISRO, launch vehicles such as the PSLV and GSLV, satellites and their uses, India's missions to the Moon, Mars and the Sun, and major international space missions and agencies. Questions often ask when and from where a satellite or mission was launched, what it was meant to do, and which launch vehicle carried it. For example, Aryabhata was India's first satellite (1975), and Chandrayaan-3 landed near the Moon's south pole in 2023. New missions are launched every year, so pair these facts with recent current affairs. Practise the space technology and ISRO questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
