Answer: Option D — Dehradun
Detailed Solution
The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) is located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
About the IIRS:
- It was established in 1966 as the "Indian Photo-interpretation Institute" (IPI), under the Survey of India, with the help of the Government of the Netherlands.
- It was set up to train people in using aerial photographs (photo-interpretation) for surveys of natural resources.
- It was later renamed the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, as satellites began to be used for remote sensing.
- It came under ISRO (through the National Remote Sensing Centre) and is now a unit of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space.
It is a premier institute for training, education and research in remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and their applications in agriculture, forestry, water resources, urban planning, disaster management and geology.
It runs courses for professionals, scientists, students and officers from India and other countries.
It hosts the "Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in Asia and the Pacific" (CSSTEAP), affiliated to the United Nations, which was set up in 1995.
It offers online courses through the "IIRS Outreach Programme" and e-learning.
What is remote sensing:
It is the science of collecting information about the Earth's surface from a distance, usually using sensors on satellites or aircraft.
India launched its first remote sensing satellite, IRS-1A, in 1988. India now has one of the largest constellations of remote sensing satellites in the world.
Other ISRO centres related to remote sensing:
National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC): Hyderabad; it receives and processes satellite data. Its "Bhuvan" geoportal provides maps and satellite images.
Space Applications Centre (SAC): Ahmedabad.
North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC): Shillong.
Other important institutions in Dehradun:
Survey of India, Forest Research Institute, Wildlife Institute of India, Indian Military Academy and Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Hyderabad has the National Remote Sensing Centre.
- ✗Ahmedabad has the Space Applications Centre.
- ✗Bengaluru has the ISRO headquarters.
Quick tip
Remember: Indian Institute of Remote Sensing = Dehradun (1966 as the Indian Photo-interpretation Institute; now a unit of ISRO; hosts the UN-affiliated CSSTEAP); NRSC = Hyderabad (Bhuvan); first IRS satellite = IRS-1A (1988).

Space Technology & ISRO Missions — Preparation
This question tests your understanding of Space Technology & ISRO Missions, a key topic in the General Knowledge section. The detailed solution above uses a step-by-step approach to show the reasoning, and where available, a shortcut that helps you solve similar questions in under 90 seconds during the actual exam.
This topic covers India's space programme: the history of ISRO, launch vehicles such as the PSLV and GSLV, satellites and their uses, India's missions to the Moon, Mars and the Sun, and major international space missions and agencies. Questions often ask when and from where a satellite or mission was launched, what it was meant to do, and which launch vehicle carried it. For example, Aryabhata was India's first satellite (1975), and Chandrayaan-3 landed near the Moon's south pole in 2023. New missions are launched every year, so pair these facts with recent current affairs. Practise the space technology and ISRO questions below, written in the style of the general awareness sections of exams such as SSC, banking, railways, CUET GAT, MAH CET and CLAT. Each question comes with a detailed explanation that adds related facts, so every question helps you revise more than one point.
