Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Raichur

Detailed Solution

In 1520, Krishnadeva Raya, the greatest ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire (ruled 1509-1529), won a decisive victory over Ismail Adil Shah, the Sultan of Bijapur, at the Battle of Raichur. He captured the fort of Raichur, in the Raichur Doab, the fertile region between the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers that had long been disputed between Vijayanagara and the Bahmani and later Bijapur rulers. Portuguese soldiers and their firearms are said to have helped Krishnadeva Raya in this battle.

Krishnadeva Raya belonged to the Tuluva dynasty. His other military achievements include:

  • Defeating the Gajapati ruler Prataparudra of Odisha and capturing Udayagiri and Kondavidu; Prataparudra later gave his daughter in marriage to him.
  • Suppressing local chieftains and defeating the Sultans of the Deccan.
  • Maintaining friendly relations with the Portuguese, who supplied horses through Goa.

He was also a great patron of literature and the arts:

He was himself a scholar and wrote "Amuktamalyada", a Telugu poem on the life of the Tamil saint-poetess Andal, and "Jambavati Kalyanam", a Sanskrit drama.

His court had eight great Telugu poets called the "Ashtadiggajas", including Allasani Peddana, who is called the "Andhra Kavita Pitamaha" (Grandfather of Telugu Poetry), and the witty Tenali Ramakrishna (Tenali Raman). Krishnadeva Raya was called "Andhra Bhoja".

He built and expanded temples, such as the Vitthala and Hazara Rama temples at Hampi, and the gopurams of many South Indian temples ("Raya gopurams"). He built a new town called Nagalapura near the capital.

The Portuguese traveller Domingo Paes visited Vijayanagara during his reign (around 1520-22) and described the capital as "as large as Rome" and well supplied with everything.

After his death in 1529, the empire declined. In 1565, the combined armies of the Deccan Sultanates (Bijapur, Golconda, Ahmadnagar and Bidar) defeated Vijayanagara at the Battle of Talikota under Aliya Rama Raya, and the capital was sacked.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Talikota (1565) was the defeat of Vijayanagara.
  • ✗Panipat (1526) was Babur's victory over Ibrahim Lodi.
  • ✗Khanwa (1527) was Babur's victory over Rana Sanga.

Quick tip

Remember: Krishnadeva Raya = Battle of Raichur (1520, defeated Bijapur), "Amuktamalyada", Ashtadiggajas (Allasani Peddana, Tenali Rama), visited by Domingo Paes; Talikota = 1565.
