New York City is located at the mouth of which river?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Hudson

Detailed Solution

New York City is located at the mouth of the Hudson river, where it flows into New York Harbor and the Atlantic Ocean.

About the Hudson River:

  • It is about 507 km long.
  • It rises in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State, at Lake Tear of the Clouds.
  • It flows south through eastern New York State, forming part of the border between New York and New Jersey near its mouth.
  • Its lower part is a tidal estuary; tides from the Atlantic Ocean reach as far as Troy, about 240 km upstream.
  • It is named after Henry Hudson, an English explorer who sailed up the river in 1609 while working for the Dutch East India Company.
  • The Erie Canal (1825) connected the Hudson to the Great Lakes, which made New York City the leading port and commercial centre of the USA.
  • In January 2009, US Airways Flight 1549 made a successful emergency landing on the Hudson ("Miracle on the Hudson").

About New York City:

  • It is the most populous city in the USA.
  • It was founded by the Dutch as "New Amsterdam" in 1624-26; the British captured it in 1664 and renamed it New York, after the Duke of York.
  • It has five boroughs: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island.
  • Manhattan is an island between the Hudson river and the East River.

It is home to the headquarters of the United Nations (on the East River), the New York Stock Exchange (Wall Street), and landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty (a gift from France, 1886), the Empire State Building, Times Square and Central Park.

It is called "The Big Apple".

It was the first capital of the USA under the Constitution (1789-1790); George Washington took the oath as the first President there.

Rivers of other American cities:

  • Washington, D.C.: Potomac river.
  • New Orleans: near the mouth of the Mississippi river.
  • Philadelphia: Delaware and Schuylkill rivers.

Montreal (Canada): St. Lawrence river.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗The Potomac river flows past Washington, D.C.
  • ✗The Mississippi river enters the Gulf of Mexico near New Orleans.
  • ✗The Delaware river flows past Philadelphia.

Quick tip

Remember: New York City = mouth of the Hudson river (named after Henry Hudson, 1609; Erie Canal 1825; "Miracle on the Hudson" 2009); Washington, D.C. = Potomac; New Orleans = Mississippi; New York = "Big Apple".
