Answer: Option B — The USA
Detailed Solution
Pittsburgh is a city in western Pennsylvania, USA, and the centre of a major industrial region.
About Pittsburgh:
- It is located where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers meet to form the Ohio river.
- It is known as the "Steel City" because it was the world's leading centre of steel production in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
- It is also called the "City of Bridges" because it has about 446 bridges.
Reasons for its growth as a steel centre:
- Rich deposits of coking coal nearby, especially in the Appalachian coalfields.
- Iron ore was brought cheaply by water from the Lake Superior region (Mesabi Range in Minnesota) via the Great Lakes.
- Limestone was available nearby.
- Good river transport on the Ohio river system, and later railways.
Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American industrialist, built huge steel plants here. His Carnegie Steel Company became part of "US Steel" in 1901, then the world's largest company.
The "Pittsburgh-Lake Erie region" became one of the largest industrial belts in the USA (part of the "Manufacturing Belt").
Decline and revival:
From the 1970s, competition from Japan and other countries, and the use of new technology, led to the closure of many steel mills. The region became part of the "Rust Belt".
Since then, Pittsburgh has transformed its economy towards education, healthcare, technology, robotics, finance and services. Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh are major centres.
Pittsburgh is often cited as a successful example of an old industrial city reinventing itself.
In December 2023, Japan's Nippon Steel agreed to buy US Steel; the deal was completed in June 2025.
Other famous industrial regions:
- Ruhr region (Germany): the largest industrial region of Europe; known for coal and steel (Essen, Dortmund, Duisburg).
- Birmingham and the Midlands (UK): the cradle of the Industrial Revolution.
- Great Lakes region (USA): Detroit (automobiles, "Motor City"), Chicago, Cleveland.
- Chota Nagpur plateau (India): the "Ruhr of India"; Jamshedpur ("Steel City of India"), Dhanbad, Bokaro.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Canada's main industrial areas are in Ontario and Quebec.
- ✗The United Kingdom's industrial regions include Birmingham, Manchester and Sheffield ("Steel City" of the UK).
- ✗Germany's main industrial region is the Ruhr.
Quick tip
Remember: Pittsburgh = USA (Pennsylvania; "Steel City"; Allegheny and Monongahela form the Ohio; Andrew Carnegie); Ruhr = Germany; Sheffield = UK's steel city; Jamshedpur = India's steel city; Detroit = "Motor City".
