What is the currency of Bangladesh?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Taka

Detailed Solution

The Bangladeshi taka (sign: ৳, code: BDT) is the official currency of Bangladesh. It is issued by Bangladesh Bank, the country's central bank, which was set up in 1971 and is headquartered in Dhaka. One taka is divided into 100 poisha. The word "taka" comes from the Sanskrit word "tanka", an ancient silver coin.

Bangladesh, which was East Pakistan from 1947 to 1971, became an independent country on 16 December 1971, after the Bangladesh Liberation War, in which India supported the Bangladeshi freedom fighters (the Mukti Bahini). The Pakistani forces surrendered in Dhaka on 16 December 1971, which is celebrated as Vijay Diwas in India and Bijoy Dibos (Victory Day) in Bangladesh. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, called "Bangabandhu" (Friend of Bengal), is regarded as the founding father of the nation. The taka was introduced as the national currency in 1972.
