What does BCIM-EC stand for?

Answer: Option D — Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor
Detailed Solution
BCIM-EC stands for the "Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor", a proposed sub-regional economic corridor linking the four countries.
About the BCIM:
Its origin lies in the "Kunming Initiative", a "Track II" (non-government) dialogue started in 1999 at Kunming, the capital of China's Yunnan province. It was called the "BCIM Forum for Regional Cooperation".
In 2013, during the visit of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang to India, the governments of India and China agreed to promote the BCIM Economic Corridor. A Joint Study Group of the four countries was set up.
The proposed corridor would run about 2,800 km, from Kunming (China) through Mandalay (Myanmar) and Dhaka (Bangladesh) to Kolkata (India), passing through India's North-East.
Its aims:
- To improve road, rail, air and waterway connectivity.
- To increase trade, investment, tourism and people-to-people contacts.
- To promote the development of India's North-East, Bangladesh, northern Myanmar and south-western China.
Present status:
- Progress has been very slow.
- China later included the BCIM in its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), but India has not joined the BRI and has been cautious about the BCIM, because of security concerns about its North-East and its objections to the BRI.
- In 2019, the BCIM was not mentioned in the list of BRI projects at the Belt and Road Forum, and it is considered to be largely stalled.
Related connectivity initiatives:
- BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal) Motor Vehicles Agreement (2015).
- BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation): 1997, Bangkok; seven members.
- India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway.
- Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (India-Myanmar).
- Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (2000): India and five Mekong countries.
- The "Stilwell Road" (Ledo Road), built during the Second World War, linked Ledo in Assam to Kunming through Myanmar.
Why not the other options?
- ✗"Bay of Bengal-China-India-Malaysia" is not the correct expansion; Malaysia is not part of it.
- ✗"Bhutan-China-India-Myanmar" is not correct; Bangladesh, not Bhutan, is the member.
- ✗"Bangladesh-Cambodia-India-Myanmar" is not correct; China, not Cambodia, is the member.
Quick tip
Remember: BCIM-EC = Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor (from the Kunming Initiative, 1999; Kunming to Kolkata; agreed 2013; largely stalled); BBIN = Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal; BIMSTEC = 1997.
